Have you ever raved on a plane? Well until now, I hadn’t either. This was an experience of a lifetime and it truly became a core memory for me. Not only was I there as a guest enjoying the different styles of music, but I was also fortunate enough to photograph the event and interview the host of Rave On A Plane.

Before we dive deep into all that, I want to take a moment to talk about the plane itself. This is a well known airplane house located in Hillsboro, Oregon. In 1999, Bruce Campbell, an electrical engineer bought a Boeing 727 jetliner from Greece and converted it into his home. He and his cat like to live a simple life and split their time between the U.S. and Japan and hopes to have a plane home there as well some day. He also practices Japanese culture which is really cool so when you enter his home, be ready to take off your shoes! Touring his plane was definitely a highlight of mine and I recommend touring it if you’re ever in the PNW.

Bruce is such a kind man for letting Rave On A Plane happen. It is his home after all and we ravers can get pretty rowdy. The event itself was curated by Rave River, an Oregon community that hosts renegades and more. The founder, Tyani Aguiar or “T”, is a beautiful soul and started Rave River in hopes to help her mom repair and build her dream property. She wanted to create a place for events to be thrown like birthdays and quinceañera, but since she was so involved in the edm scene, she decided to throw some of her own raves. After reaching out to the community to help her out and with such a positive response, each event kept getting bigger and better!

Her events are filled with fun activities alongside the music being played by amazing local djs. From water balloon fights, to rolling tray painting, to tie-dying, to Kandi making stations, to silent disco, and even a signature book for anyone interested in writing a little note, you will always find yourself engaged with something to do! She also always has vendors and artists at her events who sell their beautiful creations. Some even do some live paintings which are always fun to watch!

Her goal with these renegade raves is to create a space that’s safe for herself and others. A place with a neutral environment where people can feel like themselves. She explains that once she found this community and was taught about PLURR, she definitely wanted to pass on the love and appreciation for a community that made her feel so welcomed. She hopes Rave River can help teach core values to those who don’t know about them.
I had asked T where she sees Rave River in the next 5 years and her response was so heartfelt and wholesome. She wants to help change the stigma that PLURR is dying or that the scene is changing in a bad way. She wants her spaces to give back to the community in ways that will help change lives and for people to see that we are much more than a party. It’s a family and she wants to grow it as big as she can. In five years she also hopes the harm reduction booth will be filled with things besides overdose prevention, like mental health resources, substance abuse prevention, and general support programs for all of our family members who need it.

If you’re interested in getting involved with Rave River, T is always looking for volunteers, care team volunteers, harm reduction teams and more! She says if you get involved with them as a friend, you come back as family. After seeing how she runs her events up close and personal, I can definitely say that is the truth!

All in all, I wanted to spotlight this event because it’s so unique and I wanted to share T’s story. This is definitely a bucket list event that everyone should experience in their lifetime! I can’t wait to see what she does next because you best believe I’ll be there!
With luv,
