“I Can’t Believe They’re Letting Us Do This…” A Night on Penn Ave with Chris Lake

“I Can’t Believe They’re Letting Us Do This…” A Night on Penn Ave with Chris Lake

Written by Natalie Aponte

There are certain moments in this scene that just feel unreal while you’re in them, and this was
one of those.
Walking into the Chris Lake block party, it took a second to really take it all in… Pennsylvania
Avenue, the Capitol in the background, and thousands of people about to dance in a place that
usually holds a completely different kind of history. It’s one of the most recognizable streets in
the country, and the world for that matter, and somehow, for a few hours, it became a
dancefloor. At one point, Chris even said, “I can’t believe they’re letting us do this,” and
honestly… same.

I’ve been going to shows in DC since 2019, and consistently since things reopened post-
pandemic. I’ve seen venues evolve, crowds grow, and this scene really come into its own. But
this? This was something I’ve never experienced in my own city, the kind of event you usually
travel for. And the fact that it happened during one of the most packed weekends DC has seen,
with multiple large-scale shows across the city, made it feel even bigger. Not competitive, just a
full, collective display of what DC is capable of.

Throughout the day, it genuinely felt like a festival. Even though it was technically just a one-day
event, the energy said otherwise. Between the music, the crowd, the vendors, and activations
like the live art battle from Secret Walls (which I could not stop watching), there was always
something happening. It felt immersive without being overwhelming, like there was something
for everyone, no matter how you wanted to experience it.

The details made it feel especially local, too. From familiar faces in the crowd to touches like the
Heist-sponsored VIP bar, there was this sense of DC culture being woven into every part of the
event. It wasn’t just a big show dropped into the city, it felt like it belonged here.
And then there was the music.

What stood out immediately was how much the day belonged to the full lineup, not just the
headliner. From the moment doors opened, people were there…showing up early, filling the
space, and giving the same energy to every set. It wasn’t a “wait for the main act” kind of crowd.
It felt like a true appreciation for the scene as a whole.

That starts with the local artists. DC’s music scene is built on the people who have been putting
in the work here, and this lineup reflected that. Sets from Nadia, Darling Cool, ChaseOnAux,
House of J.A.N.E., and B&E, brought the energy from the start and set the tone for the entire
day. You could feel how much the crowd respected that, people weren’t trickling in, they were
there, present, and fully engaged.

And then the supporting acts took it even further. Clüb de Combat made their DC debut and
absolutely delivered, while Joy Anonymous also made their DC debut and brought something
really special to the stage. Having them as part of an already historic event felt intentional in the
best way.

I’ve been listening to Chris Lake for nearly 10 years now, and I’ve seen him multiple times, but
this set felt different. You could tell he felt it too. The energy between him and the crowd was
constant, every transition, every drop, people were locked in. I had friends there seeing him for
the first time, and honestly… I’m a little jealous that this was their introduction. It doesn’t get
much better than that.

More than anything, what stood out was the feeling across the entire space. Everywhere you
looked, the crowd, the staff, the stage, people were smiling, present, and fully in it. It felt like, for
a few hours, everything else paused. Not in a way that ignores reality, but in a way that reminds
you why spaces like this matter. We got to come together, move together, and share something
genuinely positive.

10,000 people, one street, one shared energy.

A beautiful day in DC, and a reminder of just how special this scene really is. Grateful to Club
Glow and Chris Lake for this one.
